Hugh lives with his artist wife, Mary Lynne MacKay, in Glen Haven, along the shores of beautiful St. Margaret’s Bay. They have two adult children, Sarah and Kevin. Hugh decided to enter politics in 2017 in order to provide accessible and effective representation for the constituents of Chester – St. Margaret’s.
Hugh, a native Nova Scotian, is a graduate of Dalhousie University and NSCC – Centre of Geographic Sciences. His professional career is in the geo-information technologies sector (survey & mapping). Before opening his consultancy practice in Glen Haven, Hugh worked in senior management roles in the private sector in Ottawa and in Munich, Germany. He also served as the Executive Director of GeoAlliance Canada, the umbrella association for the geo-information technology sector across the country, including the public service, industry, non-profits and academia.
Hugh is also the founder of Doors Open Halifax, the engaging annual event that has welcomed over 150,000 visitors to Halifax’s historic and contemporary buildings.
Hugh believes that it is government’s responsibility to create the business environment that allows the private sector to grow the Nova Scotian economy and create jobs. He is a strong believer in collaborative and innovative efforts between government, our advanced education institutions, our social enterprises and the private sector for developing a stronger economic future for Nova Scotia.
As the MLA for Chester-St. Margaret’s, Hugh can be counted on as a strong advocate for accessible seniors housing and health care, continuous improvement of our education system, maximizing the benefits of our tourism industry, protection of our coastal and wilderness environments while simultaneously supporting responsible and sustainable economic development for our communities.
